My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;  and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins

Whenever you study or read the Bible, try to keep in mind these three words, Observation (What does it say), Interpretation (what does it mean) and Application,( how can I apply it my life). As an Advocate, He is our righteous defender.  Even though we are saved, we still sin, Jesus as Advocate continuously speaks on our behalf so that even when we sin,(our progressive walk) our Advocate pleads our case. In other words, when we are guilty with sin, we are still innocence in the eyes of God because of our Advocate.  As the Propitiation for our sins, faith is all one needs to be saved. We are made holy based on our faith in Christ (our position).  Jesus death and having faith in it is all that God requires for men/women to be saved. Basically, as Advocate, we are kept by the power of God, and as the Propitiation, we are saved by the power of God.
