“HOW TO BECOME A WINNER ”

Allen S. McLauchlin, Pastor

November 16, 2014

Elihu son of the Buzite said, “I am young and you are old, so I held back from telling you what I think. I thought, ‘Those who are older should speak, for wisdom comes with age.’ But it’s the spirit , the breath of the Almighty within them, that makes them intelligent. Sometimes the elders are not wise. Sometimes the aged do not understand justice. So listen to me, and let me tell you what I think. Job 32:6-10

Youngsters who stand for something are not likely to easily fall for anything. Isaac was obedient.  Joseph beat sexual temptation, David showed exemplary courage in face of danger. Josiah stood firm on ethics and Daniel demonstrated that integrity need not necessarily stand in the way of promotion. Mary accepted her responsibility.  Timothy found the ultimate adventure in the Christian life .

1. Realize that there can be complications within the family unit.

Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12

They arrived at the place where God had told him , Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. Genesis 22:9,10

David was the youngest son. David’s three oldest brothers stayed with Saul’s army, but David went back and forth so he could help his father with the sheep in Bethlehem. 1 Samuel 17:14,15

Joseph  brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and would not speak a kind word to him. Genesis 37:4

His parents didn’t know what to think. “Son,” his mother said to him, “why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.” “But why did you need to search?” he asked. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they didn’t understand what he meant. Luke 2:48,49

2. Chose your friends wisely

Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."  Come back to your senses. 1 Corinthians 15:33,34

My child, don’t go along with them! Stay far away from their paths. Proverbs 1

But Amnon had a very crafty friend—his cousin Jonadab. He was the son of David’s brother . One day Jonadab said to Amnon, “What’s the trouble? 1 Samuel 13:1

I have zealously served the Lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.” You are3 not alon, I have 7000 who will stand with you. 1 Kings 19:14,18

Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said. “At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young Daniel 1:12

3.  Stay focus on what's important  in life.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Moses, chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. Hebrews 11:25

Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts and clouds your judgment. Instead, pursue righteous living, 2 Timothy 2:22

And these also stagger from wine and come unglued from beer: They stagger from beer and are confused with wine; They become addicted, rendering them incapable  of making sound decisions Isaiah 27:7

4.  Don’t be afraid to dream big and rise above your circumstances .

Delight yourself in the LORD  and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the LORD;  trust in him and he will do this:  He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn. Psalm 37:4-7

Therefore we do not lose heart.   For our light and momentary setbacks  are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen., that is trusting God 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Hebrews 13:5,6

You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” ? Maya Angelou
